Clams And Shrimps

why do people have clams and shirimps how big do clams get and how much do they cost
Clams and shrimps are good for your tanks upkeep in my eyes (althought i dont have any shrimps at present)

Clams are like mini filters, they live on the bad things in your water and they can filters many ltrs a day depending on there size

Shrimps are good at cleaning around the tank and eat things such as fmall bits of waste food and such

You can get snails to and they are good for the same reason as shrimps

Im not sure about sizes for clams or shrimps

But here is a picture of my 3 clams

Now that's a nifty organism for your tank. Do you ever see the clams while they are open and feeding?
Yea they come out a good bit usuall during the day (this pic was night)
Guess its a good plan since the plecs and loaches go about at night
They burry in the gravel a lot but the walking catfish likes to dig them out
He dosent try to eat them though
Although i thought he would

Nope. Clams are not fantastic critters to have in your tank.

Unless you put lots of effort into digging them up and using a pipette or syringe to feed them small particles of food suspended in water every few days, they will just be slowly starving to death.

They don't filter bad toxins or anything at all like that out of the water, they add to the bioload like any other animal. They usually eat suspended algae particles in the wild, and the only aquariums that have a enough to properly support them have water that is a thick green soup.

These idea that they are good for tanks and filters is just bad lfs/ebay retailer advice who don't know what they are talking about or don't care.

They aren't incredibly hard to keep, but they are quite a lot of effort to keep considering how little they actually do, read these posts:

freshwater mussels and clams, freshwater mussels and clams 2 and 3.

if a clam is on the surface, its in trouble. indeed, if you see them at all, they are very unhappy. if you have seen one feeding, its dying. slowly starving to death.
