My current filter is a juwel compact with a 400l/hr bioflow powerhead.
The filtration is as follows

white-wool pre-filter
black- active carbon coarse sponge
green- nitrate removing sponge
blue- coarse blue sponge

I am contemplating removing the carbon filter, moving the nitrate sponge up a level and placing a juwel cirax media filter basket between the green and coarse blue sponges. I read on the new fishless cycling post about not needing a carbon filter unless medicines are being used.

any advice would be appreciated.

ps-I cannot afford to upgrade to a better filter at the moment

Personally, I'd get rid of both the carbon and the nitrate removing sponges and replace them with either normal sponge or cirax or some other bio media.

Another user asked about this on a different thread, and I remember Waterdrop (I think) saying that the carbon part of the carbon sponge would only last a few days, but the sponge part of it would be helpful in the long run. So as long as it is a sponge material, it should be a valid bacteria-growing space for you if you don't want to replace it. I agree with Fluttermoth that you don't need the 'special' type sponges. Regular sponges and bio-media pellets are all you need.
