Hello,
I have had fish for many years. I think I'm now ready for new types of fish, CICHLIDS. I still like community fish but I would like to have cichlids. I think cichlids are so cool and they look great.
What can I put in my new 30 gallon?
CICHLIDS-What kind?
HELP?
Please reply with ides!

it depends if you want a nice community cichlid, or, a really aggressive cichlid. i like the agressive ones more. some community cichilds would be... rams, kribs, and some other dwarf cichlids. the more agressive ones that could go in your 30 gallon are, firemouth cichlids, and convict cichlids. im not sure of any more that could go in your 30 gallon. convict cichilds are really agressive, and only 2 could go in your 30 gallon. and the 2 should be a male and female, otherwise i think they will beat eachother up. BUT if one is a male and female, they WILL breed alot. and they are EXTREMELY aggressive when breeding, so no other fish could go in the tank except maybe some tough dither fish. if you got firemouths, you could fit a pair in there too, with some dither fish. dithers are really fast schooling fish that go in tanks with the aggressive cichlids to chase and make the cichlids feel more comfortable. check in the fish index if theres anymore cichlids that can fit in your tank.
Good luck with your tank! :D

thank you

whats your ph? most africans prefer harder and high ph whereas most american prefer the softer acidic water.

a fire mouth looks like this:

and this is a pink convict :

i would put some convicts and firemouths in that tank, like 2 of each

Have you considered africans? There is far more choice if you're looking for relatively aggressive cichlids for your 30 gallon. Maybe ask in the african cichlids forum? Firemouths are very nice fish - convicts breed too much though IMO :p Only get convicts if you have some way of getting rid of the fry (not all LFSs will take them). If you are interested in something different - shell-dwelling (african) cichlids are very interesting but also generaly very small. My favourite is n. multifasciatus (the smallest) and you could keep a nice-sized colony in a 30 gallon and they would probably breed quite a bit too. Neotropical cichlids and dwarf cichlids - such as rams or apistos, would also make nice inhabitants though they need acidic water and are far less aggressive than convicts or most africans. A breeding pair of pulcher/kribs would be nice too. Not to mention the peaceful keyholes (which mix well with rams and the like). Just make sure you research whatever you go for very thoroughly first as cichlids often have very specialised requirements and not all cichlids can be mixed or have the same prefferences.

ya convicts are quick multipliers, it can acually cause alot of dammage, they dont do good with others if they're breeding

Agreed.....in all reality breeding cons are species tank only unless you can provide a large tank and stocked with fish that are more aggressive than the cons themselves.

thanks guys B)

the responses were a great help :)

however :fun:

i would like some more pics and ideas (the more the meryer, right?) so if you got some please share

I would suggest firemouths too, I have two of them and they are great especially when they are eating. :D The male firemouth likes to chase the female firemouth its fun to watch. They never hurt each other though which is a good thing. :p Good luck with whatever you choose.

man i went to some farther away fish stores, and in one they had about a 50G with probably 20 cons, plus ab about 20 babies, it was awsome, they all got along so well, and there were all these mothers guarding thier fry or eggs, it was like a town made of convicts, it was really cool, but i doubt it would work in a home aquarium

Heh thats cool, the LFS near me stocks thier tanks with a lot of fish but they sell so fast it's never been a problem.

I got 2 jewels and 2 convicts and a kissing gourami.

The convicts are the first fish the other 3 let in.

I really like the fish I have, not to mention my jewels just laid some eggs.

:kana:

Oh yea, nobody said it here in this thread, but get lots of hiding places for your fish if you do get cichlids :D
