Cichlids

Thanks guys again for helping out here :)

The water quality is always good in my tank - I have clown loaches which really do need good water to thrive - and one of my babies has grown almost an inch in literally 5 months so they must be happy. On the more technical side, I take water readings often and have the tank over-filtered with internals currently, until I make myself a sump for the bigger tank.

It's just that pH *sigh* ... my OH has been talking about purchasing a water butt for the garden though - this would be a viable alternative to RO, right? (so long as we don't have droughtish summer months!!).

I've posted in the scientific bit to get some more specific guidelines on how to adjust pH safely for my fish - so I'll be doing it very gradually (and probably trying out the peat as an extract in water in a 'test tank' without fish to see what happens really).

I've just been looking up altifrons on the net, and have found some profiles which say their pH range is 6-8 - this seems a big range, but I'm tempted to do some more reading up and asking around to see if anyone does keep their SA cichlids at 8.0 with success.

Would it be worth me asking about the altifrons I purchase to see if they're wild caught or tank-bred - this makes some difference, doesn't it?

I'm so excited - I'm going to absolutely love getting this all up and going and seeing my final tank plan take shape.
I currently have some L128s and an L200 in my big tank, which is not where they belong, but their own 6ft is in the pipeline (the materials have just arrived! :hyper: ).

I was offered a single Altifrons @ 9" for £20 the other day or a breedign group of 3 varying in sizes of between 7"-9" (including the single mentioned earlier) for £50, but went with the Tapajos instead.

:( I paid £30 for my 4 babies but I dont know I guess its what I expected most shops near me sell bigish geos for £22 each and small for £7 each so I just went with it.... Im happy with them so its cool :)

Yeh, sometimes people can charge over the odds, i have seen full grown Juruparis for around £100 which is nuts! but then they do take around 6 years to get to full size, but go for about £3 when little.

My local maidenhead changes tehre prices so often that sometimes you can get some real bargains, wasn't long ago they was trying to give away a 18" spotted gar! (for free)

a bit off topic but
You should start a blog about the building of your tank with photos. I love to see how people put together their dream tanks. Good luck yes do keep us posted.

I was just thinking that actually, so I walked round taking photos of all of the piles of wood and polystyrene LOL!

I will make a blog though, as I'm sure someone may find it useful one day :D

Well, I went into the Maidenhead the other day and spoke with the bloke there about them. He says they are kept at 7.5 in the shop and will do fine at 8.0. He's kept similar species at that and had no problems with HITH disease.

Soooo ... I took the plunge and bought some, and I'm very chuffed with them.

Got a few photos now they've settled down a bit.
