Hi all, thinking about setting my 125 litre back up in a few weeks time, I'd like to give larger cichlids, I've kept Rams before so ideally want something a bit bigger than 4 inches, so far I've looked at Keyhole Cichlids and Fire Mouth's just wondered if anyone else can recommend suitable species?

Cheers

I'd be tempted going smaller, Tanganyikan, shell dwellers, Julidochromis, or exLamprologus caudopunctatus :good:

I've kept Neolamprologus Multifasciatus before so I'm looking to step into the larger Cihclid territory

Possibly the ones you mention but no idea of how many you could have. I was quite suprised when I measured my 125 last night that it was 32" long!

I'm probably going to settle for Fire Mouth Cichlids, can anyone recommend any shoaling tank mates?

Praecox rainbows or Pentazona barbs would get my vote.

Might be worth considering a Rainbow Cichlid - I was dubious at first having seen the pic's out there, but mine matured s/he (not sexed) has coloured up nicely and is full of personality.

Unfortunately given your tank size you haven't got much option for 'larger' cichlids.

Bare in mind the firemouths will reach 5+ inches though. I have a full grown gorgeous Ellioti and I wouldn't want to add him to my 125. The praecox rainbows are totally awesome for a shoaling species, but maybe you need something with a totally different colour such as yellow? Maybe golden barbs or golden zebra danios? Add a group of panda corys and a couple of pitbull plecs.

May need to adjust water chemistry for these fish considering OP has kept Rams, who seem to fair better in softer more acidic water assuming it is the German blue rams or variations that OP has kept in the past.

Another cichlid is a convict but if decided on firemouths a pair would be all you could probably put in since they become extremely aggressive during this time

Tempted to go for Bolivian Rams now, I've kept Blue Rams before, wouldn't mind giving Bolivians a go again.

I would say that is a better option for the size of tank you have mate. You could make them a really good home in a tank of that size.

I know of someone selling a pair of Butterfly with fry in ng17 if you're interested.

I would also say Bol rams, I have also Congo tetra,s they also get to a good size and have a beautifull rainbow effect or how about Kribs. I find these fish get on well together.

I've kept Ramirezi before, not looking to keep Blue Rams because the other fish I wish to keep have different temperature requirements, the Bolivians will cope with the lower temperatures better whereas the Blue Rams wouldn't.
