Could i please have some advice having never kept cichlids before.
I have two things i want to ask here. 1 is what cichlids i could keep with an empty tank and 2. what cichlids i could currently keep, even if its only one.

My current stocking for reference:
  • 4 Platies
  • 2 Swordtails
  • 2 Dwarf Gouramis
  • 4 Neons
  • 3 Alb Cories

rams like soft water so if you live in an area like me with really hard water is it a bit of a pain, i still see them in lfs but they wont be as confortable

now in recent years rams are tolerating harder water more and more as they are being breed in it, i have a Ph of about 7.5 and a KH of 240mg/l and i have kept rams for YEARS successfully

im not saying th they cannot bekept in hard water, its just i had the chance of getting a really nice pair bred by a friend who breeds hundreds of various fish but his fish prefered the softer water. the ones in the shops round here have adapted soo much as all the dodgy breeding goes on its hardly surprising.

yeh your right, but its a good and bad thing as there more widely available, but they become a little prone to nitrates although they are anyway there just more sensative

what about keyholes? it depends on the size of tank, but these are extrememly peaceful even shy.

yup truck, they are 5" so are on the borderline for a 60 litre, i have rainbows tho so who am i to talk?
i was going to buy pair of bolivian rams, been looking into it, really still undecided because of the perfect water quality required, im still fairly new to fishkeeping and dont want to have fish dying all the time, like the last experience, IT WAS HELL, 9 fish dead in 6 days, wake up to a gourami dead or several harlequins, Made me want to give up

yeh thats why cycling is SO important. in a 60 litre you dont want anything bigger than 3"inches, unless its a bristle nose etc, but when did they ever lay eyes on a fish as prey, or to work there aggression on?

i didntsee that it was a 60L, yeah i agree they get too big. well if your fish die like that something is wrong and i would want to find out what it is and correct it very quickly.

yea im on top of it now, i put it down to something either 3 harlequins or live brine shrimp entering the tank causing either a serious bacterial infection or internal parisites, the water quality was quality, it wish disease
