Is your house/apt really that crammed to not be able to put in a 10 gallon tank? If you don't have a ton of fish to QT, you don't even need a filter if you get a bubbler and do water changes every day. Just pull the water off your existing tank and it gives your fish in the main tank a nice drink of freshwater b/c it's essentially doing a water change. Btw, you don't need a light either. (get a bubbler and heater and tank, and possibly a decoration for them to hide by for security) Bare bottom is best. It's easier to clean/siphon also. The bubbler itself doesn't put oxygen in the water. It's for stirring the surface of the water as that's what adds oxygen to the water...surface disruption. Also, its easy to find cheap tanks that people are getting rid of. Don't think that you have to buy new ;)

Many fish can live in many different water types due to captive breeding and adaption. The fish do the best when they are allowed to live in the water type in which they were made for, althought they can be kept differently. I keep my tank at a ph of 8.6 by means of high ph city water along with using a cichlid substrate as a buffer, just in case the city changes their water...again
