Ok guys might sound like a silly one but i've been on cookiecutter found a nice setup i'd like for my tank but it suggests that i stock my tank with pairs?

I have also read that to pair up cichlids you should mix a group and well see who pairs up basically.

How do i go about finding pairs as i cant feasably buy groups an then rehome the guys that i dnt need.

This is what im looking for can i jus buy a male and female and hope they pair up? if they dont are there any concequences other than them not breeding?

• Julidochromis regani - 1 pair
• Neolamprologus leleupi - 1 pair
• 'Lamprologus occelatus- 1 trio

Any help would be appreciated or recommendations for a 25gal cichlid setup preferably small cichlids so i can have a few in my tank, so im assumin Tanganyika or dwarfs are my only options

Thanks

You can just add a male and female and see if they pair up, the consequences would be that one might kill the other if they aren't compatable. And you would have to be certain they are male and female which sometimes be hard to tell. For the trio, you'll want a male and two females.

I have to say have been lucky and the male and female Lamprologus occelatus I bought did just pair up and start breeding. I had had 2 males (as my Neolamprologus Brichardi killed the other) and the female has accepted both of them. I do need another female though but I am struggeling to find a definate female to add to the tank. As for the Julies I have had no experience with keeping them myself but I understand they are notoriously difficult to pair up if you just purchase a male and a female with the female frequently killing the male. The Leleupi I have no idea about but I am inclinded to agree with dthoffsett that sticking 2 together and hoping they are a male and female and hoping they are compatible is probably a bad idea. I have seen a few pairs come up for sale now and then so it is probably worth keeping an eye out?
