I have a community tank, heavily planted 170L.

The tank has pearl gouramis, zebra danios and pepeed cories in it and i want to add somethin bright and eye catchin.
Would a single cichlid or some sot be suite to the tank. Obviously one of the smaller species

Can't think of any old world...

But as for new worlds.

German Blue Rams - Though with your current stock I wouldn't advise them because they do much much better at 28C which is too high for the current fish

Bolivian Ram - A good choice all round. 24C-26C are suitable temps

Keyhole - Though not colourful would probably fit nicely

Some of the Apistos - Eg. Cockatoo Dwarf Cichlid

hey thanks for reply
Just checked each one of them there. Ya the keyhole wouldnt stand out too much in the tank, but the bolivian rams look good. I like the colours, will check them out a little more and see.
Can i ask why no old world would be suitable, is it because of their size?

Hey all, thanks for replies. That Kribensis is nice, and also the rams.
Would them species be ok on their own, without any other of same kind. I seen somethin both pairs of cichlids gangin up on other tank mates

if your gona go for kribensis in a community tank make sure you get a pair (1 male 1 female). They are very colourful and if you would like to have some babies that are not liveborn then these are the ones. They breed very easily if they have their own little territory/house in the corner of your tank and they realy look after their little ones. If they have enough room to have their own little space they will be fine in a community. I think they are lovely little fish and very colourful most of the time

^ the one i had got pretty aggressive.

The rainbow??

my last post wasn't very clear there, i didnt make any sense of what i was tryin to ask lol
but would it be possible to keep a ram AND kribensis in my community tank? or would a pair of rams gang up on my other fish, or would i just be best to keep one singlely in the community tank

If you get Kribs DO NOT get a pair. When they breed they are ruthlessly aggressive. Great parents, but not so good for a community set-up. As they can and will kill fish that are 'in their territory'.

I'm not sure if A Ram and Krib would co-exist happily or not. It may well depend on the temperament of the actual fish in question.
Perhaps post in the new world section asking?

I personally would just keep either one or the other.
But that's cause I don't know if they'd work alongside eachother, and wouldn't want to risk it without someone saying they'd done it before.

p.s

rams are lovely and gentil too however they are delicate, easily bullied and have a fairly short life span.

rams like to be in more than one as they are timid and more confident with more than one,,,they wont gang up on anything..not a chance bless them....kribs are best in pairs and that way you will get the best of them but tank does need to have plenty of room for then to defend their little space...the most they will do it chase anything that comes on their patch for couple seconds at most

thanks everyone for all yer help :)

and ya this should be in new world cichlids, just wasn't sure where to begin with this topic :)

gonna actually continue this topic there cos have another question lol

Rams don't need to be in more than one...and they certainly aren't timid.
I don't know where you're getting your info from dani*starfish....but I'd go and double check it if I were you.

k i just started a new thread on keepin two rams together lol, that mighten be good so??

mmmmmm

its sounds like someone is slightly jelous of someone with some real knowledge and experience..This is a forum and all suggestions are supposed to be welcome??? maybe you think you know more than you do? in the grown up world you will find that quite often people have different ideas and experiences of things.

Im wondering now if my degree in marine biology, my job at an aquarium as an aquarist, my 10 years experience in running an aquatics/reptile outlet has somehow failed me. Maybe i should ask you for advice on fishkeeping???mmm i think not somehow.
