anyone know what type of cichlid this is? I caught it in a reservoir on Kaua‘i. sorry for the blurry pics. they definitely don’t look like any tilapia i’ve ever seen before other than the similar body shape, plus, they have distinct red on the belly and black stripes/ spots, which i’ve never seen on a tilapia other than the buttiferkeri

*they don’t have red in these pics because they lost their color a little when I put them in the tank, which was about 20 minutes ago.

They look like fry so it is very hard to tell what species you have. You could probably look into what species are in your area and then search individual species to look at juveniles of that kind. Might be able to ID it that way.

thank you, he’s around 2 inches long, but the hard thing is that there are soooo many introduced invasive species here in Hawai‘i from african cichlids to south american cichlids, to guppys, molly’s, and platys, it’s hard, but so think it may be some species of tilapia, maybe the red breasted tilapia.
