When I moved my cichlids to a bigger aquarium, I wanted to get more places for them to hide in. Unfortunately, I'm somewhat of a low-budget person and can't afford much.

So instead of buying a cave, I bought a good-sized tube of aquarium sealant. I then selected a bunch of pebbles that I knew would be okay for my tank, and built my own cave, using the aquarium sealant as glue. It worked great!!! Not only was I able to modify it and build it to the size I wanted, but it also had a nice, natural look to it that you can't usually get in fish stores with their pastel colored plastics. The cichlids themselves just LOVE it!!! Due to all of the little cracks and chinks that I wasn't able to fill in, it isn't quite as dark the storebought ones and it also has other smaller openings that the cichlids can swim in and out of, so they don't feel at all "trapped." One of my cichlids, the main "earth-mover," apparently enjoyed taking out all of the gravel, leaving a nice mound at the main entrance. After that, he went on to hollow out all my other decorations, too... I think he's obsessed.

Anyway, the natural rock caves are a cheap, fairly easy, and even better alternative to storebought decorations!!!
