Can anybody please give me tips and guidelines on what to look for in a good quality angelfish (body shape and the like)? The internet wasn't much help.
Look for a nice shaped body and long fins. Make sure there is no damage, missing parts or weird shapes on the fish. The following images show a juvenile angelfish about an inch long, and an adult about 2-3 inches long. The young fish aren't as round as the adults but both fish have good body shapes and fins.
The two fish are different colour forms with the juvenile being a normal wild silver form (or possibly a Pterophyllum altum) and the adult being a blue pearlscale or something weird. Blue pearlscale is Pterophyllum scalare or a scalare x altum.

the fish store (a fish market really) that sells all the fish i buy from is far away so i couldn't really check their stock all the time (i wish i could). Anyway, thank you both!If the fish has white edging to the tail or fins, clamped fins, a bent body, bent back or the tail is drooping down, avoid the fish.
If there are splits in the fins and tail, that could be caused by physical damage or the fish has fin rot or is recovering from fin rot.
If the fish is a light colour (white, yellow, silver), look for red lines in the tail. That is a clear indication of fin rot.
If you post some pictures of the fish you are interested in I can have a look at them and see if they look ok.
