I bought 2 cherry shrimps for Milo's little tank today and he doesn't seem very impressed so far :/ he kept chasing one of them, never attacking it (like he could catch it anyway!) but chasing it with a very grumpy expression on his face.

I'd never seen him flare before today :p

He's sulking in his coconut cave at the minute.

Anyway, does anybody have any tips on keeping these shrimp with my betta? :)

he'll calm down, mine was the same

agree with truck, he just needs to get used to it. Also should you not get a few more shrimp, they like being in groups. :)

If he doesn't settle down, which he should, try taking all of them out, re arrange the tank, put the shrimp in, let them settle and then put Milo back in :)

Thank you :)

I didn't know about numbers and didn't want to overpopulate such a little tank but I'll buy more if everything goes ok with these 2 :) Plus, I didn't realise how expensive they were! :p

Its like anything he just needs to get used to it :) He may be annoyed because its his 'territory' so rearranging the tank would be a good idea. He will probably enjoy just chasing them, i may consider a few for one of my tanks :D

You haven't said if your tank is planted or not. If not then I would suggest getting a few real plants, easy varieties like Camomba and Elodia, maybe also a moss ball . The betta and shrimp can both hide in the vegetation, and shrimp like to pick over leaves and moss balls for bits of food ( plus the plants will use up nitrates )

Even silk plants are better than nothing.

I have a large clump of cabomba and 2 clumps of amazon sword :)

Milo loves hiding in the cabomba :)

Here's Milo when I first got him:

Not very good with a camera I'm afraid :(

And I'll try and get a couple of the shrimp when I can find them!

They're getting along fine now btw, Milo's just ignoring them :)

Thats good to hear, my betta's never seemed interested in any of the tankmates i had them with mostly shrimp and frogs. Beauty fish though

I can't find my shrimps! I could only find one last night but figured the other was hiding because they're quite hard to spot.

Here's hoping they're hiding again!

I don't think the filters anywhere near strong enough to harm them because Milo likes to rest underneath it and he's never had his fins damaged by it.

:sly: I'm starting to suspect the fat looking betta in the corner!

I wouldnt worry too much yet, cherry shrimps are good at hiding although they should stand out being red.

My shrimp was an expert hider, well she still is. I had once turned off the tank and was going to empty it because i thought she had died. I had not seen her all week and most of the week before. While taking some of the wood out before i was about to empty the tank she jumped out from behind my Anubis. She is still chilling in there, only see her about once a month but i don't doubt she's there anymore.

Im sure yours are doing the same. They should be fast enough to escape a betta.

Good luck!

Thank you for the reassurance :)

I did see a shrimp yesterday, he/she'd climbed all the way up an amazon sword leaf :p I didn't know they could climb that well!

My gravel was labelled "natural lake side" or something like that so it's lots of different shade of brown and has some red in it! :/
