Cherry Shrimp Tank Tips.

Hi guys I am setting up a shrimp only tank. I picked up another tank today 58L. I am using gravel only due to having an under gravel filter.

just wondering what tips you guys have to help me get this set up and running. including what to buy extras and stuff.

I am doing research now whilst my tank is cycling.

Shrimps like plants and things to hide in. I own 2 ghost srimp and they like to hide so maybe consider that. Shrimp like to pick at the ground also, so maybe tiny fast sinking food might be a good idea to!

So it would be a good idea to make this a planted tank as well??

I got some amano shrimp who have been lucky they always out and none of my fish touch them.

Easy to keep if your water conditions are good and stable. I put about 20 in a month or so ago, and I now have a breeding colony of about 50. My tank is planted and includes rock. There is algae in the tank for them to graze on, but I feed them algae wafers every so often aswell.

so once my tank has cycled it should be good to add. do you have any fish in your tank.

Yeah should be fine. There are no fish in at the minute, but I did have Harlequin Rasbora's in (i'm deciding on a new species to keep) I just Amano Shrimp and Assasin Snails in there with them.

Tidy i got some amano shrimp im my main tank they gone quite big now. They are always out aswell.

In response to the OP, Amano shrimp won't breed in freshwater. If you want to raise the baby shrimp from the larvae form to adult, they need to be in salt water to survive. You will see the females holding eggs but you won't get any babies from it. They like lots of plants, especially they enjoy browsing on moss balls and java moss. They also enjoy sitting on hornwort but any live plants are good for them. When you look for plants make sure they haven't been treated with "snail killer" because snail killer is also shrimp killer! Make sure to keep the water very clean, they cannot tolerate any amounts of ammonia and nitrite. Plus they are very sensitive to most medications so don't medicate the tank unless you know they will be ok with it. They do well with a wide temperature range(as long as it's not too hot) and are very active and good at cleaning up. They should only be fed in very small amounts.

never seen any of this in my lfs where can i get some?

Yup, that's hornwort. If you can't find it at the lfs, you could probably get some from someone on the forum that lives in your area. It grows like a weed so most people have much to give away or sell for little money. It can also be found with the pond plants at lfs or at a gardening centre or greenhouse.
