Hello! I want to breed red cherry shrimp in a spare 10 gallon tank I have. It has a white sand, one of those small filters you put inside the tank, a heater, a hood, and a light. Any advice would help such as diet, sexing, decor, and the breeding itself

Is the tank cycled? Shrimps dont like immature tanks as they need the biofilm. Get 10 to ensure some males and females. Females are redder and are thicker between the abdomen and tail (like a skirt). Add moss or fine leafed plants for them to shelter and feed in. Cover the filter intake (sponge or cut-off tights) to prevent shrimplets getting sucked in. Feed crab cuisine and algae (bowl of water with pebbles in a window will grow it, rotate algae-covered pebbles into tank).

If you just want to keep cherry shrimp, then a 10 gallon is more than adequate. If you want to breed good quality cherry shrimp you will need more than one tank. Good idea with the pebbles.

the tank is cycled but the fish I had in there decided to jump through the little area where the cord for the filter goes through(it’s a pre cut hole). Since I have sand and I can’t really cycle gravel through there because I don’t want to transfer it from my other tanks, can I cycle a piece of decor in a little plastic container by the window? I can also put some pieces of ceramic by the window too. And last question for now, can I keep them with the blue velvet shrimp without any risk of the babies being brown or some other color that isn’t red or blue?

I keep mine in a 20G long and they breed like Rabbits. I just took over 100 to my lfs. I feed Crab Cuisine and Kens Veggie Sticks. Also give 1/2 Tum once a week for calcium.

Mine are just for feeding some of the babies to my Apistogramma Agassizii. I want to mix some of the color variants too so they can look cool

If you mix different coloured cherry shrimps, you'll end up with a tank of brown shrimps.

Mine I breed in a 29g long. They breed fast and healthy. I feed mine crab cuisine and algae wafers.

@Deanasue, how much did your LFS give you for those 100? I’m think about selling some of mine at my LFS. (In total I bet I have around 40-50) I wouldn’t sell all of them though, maybe just 15-20. I also have a pregnant female that will drop soon.

I just get store credit for them. I told them they could have them this time though because I thought I was out of the shrimp business. The shrimp had other ideas so I now have about 20 in the tank again.

So how much in store credit did they give you? When I sell Anacharis to my LFS I get in store credit as well.
