Hi there,
I bought some cherry barbs yesterday, I didnt realise there were barbs out there this small! I have never seen this type before, only the bigger more aggressive barbs such as tiger barbs so I was pleasantly surprised to be told they would get on well in my tank as they are beautiful!

Anyway, upon inspection once I had released them into the tank, I noticed that two of them have been quite badly nipped on their tail fin, to the point where there is barely anything left! Im assuming that this has happened in the previous tank they were in at the shop because my fish are fine with them and have presented no hostility towards them.

I was just wondering if they will grow back, and if so how long will this take?

Thanks, Amy.

it should grow back, depending on how big the injury is how long it will take. it could have very well been a fellow cherry barb, how many do you have? they do tend to be a bit nippy.

I had something similar happen to one of my Pearl Danios, about six weeks ago... I found him gasping, upside down behind the Fluval U4 in the 620T tank, with no tail fin to speak of! I left "Mr Stumpy" in the 620T and moved out the Yellowtail Tetra plus other Pearls (leaving him with my very peaceful Filament Glassfish, now with EliseW). At the time, I was expecting to find him dead the next morning...

I did ~25% water changes every 2 or 3 days, regular small feeds of both Tetra Prima and more treats of defrosted bloodworm than normal. "Mr Stumpy"'s upper tail fin grew back much quicker then the lower and he has been reunited with the group for ~3 weeks, doing very indeed!

Amongst my ongoing tradegies of the Yellowtails injurying and killing each other and losing four of my five new African Butterfly Fish while in QT, "Mr Stumpy" has been a great inspiration for me in testing times, when I got close to the point of seriously considering giving up the hobby altogether.

Good luck saving your Cherry Barbs!

Thanks for the replies =]
I have 4 cherry barbs, but they came from a tank with many different varieties of tetras, minnows and danios.
They seem to be settled in my tank, they are swimming about happily with my harlequin rasboras and ate fine this morning so Im hoping giving it time will help.
I have got something called Pimafix which does say that it can be used for wounds, will this help speed up the recovery at all?
Thanks, Amy.

What's the ratio of males to females (the bright red ones are males)? You should be looking at 2+ females per male as the males do pester the females. The more females the less time the male spends pestering each one.

I think all of mine are female as they are all more of an orangey colour than a red? The girl in the shop said she thought they were all female.
I have Harlequin rasboras, Neon Tetras, the Cherry Barbs and a Betta.
Amy.
