Iam changing ugf to internal will I have to take out ugf or could I leave it in. :

I would take it out, I know its quite a big job but it's worth it.
Fish can get trapped underneath it as some fry bury themselves in the substrate.

thank you for the info much appreciated

i would run the new filter with the u/g filter then in about a months time
remove the up lifts and leave the filter plate in situ it wont do any harm
if you blank the holes were the up lifts were with a small pice of slate

good luck biff
