Changing Tank

Ok so i was last on here trying to sort out a lobster/jewel cichlid problem, which i tought was sorted. I now have not 1 firemouth left out of 4(lobster ate these). Well i am now left with 2 angels, 5 corys, 2 gold garuami, 1 pearl, 1 khuli loach and the dreaded lobster(lol)

I am now at the stage where its either, a. sell up or b. red bellies.

I am thinking the rbp's after new year. Just going to put 5 into the tank with the others and let the rbp's do what ever they do to get big.

If all this goes tits up i will probibly have a 280ltr setup for sale.


Any comments welcome good or bad.

so let me get this right you want to add 5 red bellies into a tank with other fish that cant defend themselves..... you will be sending them to their slaughter also a tank of your size wont be big enough to host 5 adult red bellies. as juvis yes if an upgrade is on its way but long term its not a good idea im affraid

It's not fair you should sacrifice the other fish. You should offload them before hand. At the end of the day, Red Bellies don't even need live food, they can be fed frozen muscles and lance for example.

Or just get a completely different setup more suitable for the Reds.

what sort of size tank would u suggest? or how many rbp's?

Hmmm, Im not sure to be truthful. Matt will probably know more, and Simonas as I think he used to keep them.

I reckon for 5-6 fully grown, you'll need something 100 gallon+

i would say for a group of 5-6 then a 6x2x2 should be ok.

The lobster is just acting by its nature, and the fish you have remaining are also all vulnerable to the lobster. You should really rehome the lobster or separate it from the fish, as it can't be fun for the fish in there living in constant terror of the lobster.

the rest of the fish mostly swim near the top of the tank and the cory's seem to get on with the lobster.

unfortunatly the blue lobster WILL get the cory's and basically probably all other fish, as when its lights out they will stop being as active, yet your lobster will still want food. By leaving them in there your murdering them all and I mean in it every way possible, there is sadly no nice way of putting it to be totally truthfull and am surprised if by the time you read this more fish have been killed or harmed for no fault but your own.

Thanks for the comments. I am rehoming the angels asap and the others will prob go back to the lfs. I have been told that if i get say 6/7 reds, they will sort out their balance with possible losses in the process. Maybe, i only get 5 so that i'll be left with say 4. Sound any better?

To be honest your problem is the lobster why not rehome the lobster and keep the community? Or if you want a tank of predatory fish like piranhas why not find alternatives. Red Bellies wont work but if you like predators like them what about a big big school of Exodons aka the bucktooth tetra.

Or if its the shape of Piranhas you like there are a few species of Silver Dollar you could go for which are essentially vegetarian piranhas


While a 280 liter tank is not a huge tank for predators like the Piranhas there is always a way to get what you want in a tank you just have to look for alternatives I would hazard a guess that for 75% of fish there is a smaller alternative of similar (if not identical) appearance and/or behavior Dont give up just yet!
