I am not an expert, and you have been given some great advice. When I changed my substrate this is the order i did it..

1 purchased pack of beer for my LFS, he very kindly loaned me a tank
2. Washed new gravel in buckets until clear
3. Filter, heater, water and plants into new tank .. netted fish over. Parameters near identical so was lucky
4. Scooped old gravel and binned 3/4
5. Cleaned tank, put the retained old gravel back at the back of the tank, then added the new substrate
6. Moved everything back to old tank.
7. Had a few large G&T, to calm nerves
Most importantly,no casualties

Fast forward 6 months, tank in reasonable shape, the problems I am having is algae and plant growth... the forum is helping with both .

Good luck
