Hi Everyone,

I am am going to change the fish in my tank. Could someone tell me which of my existing fish I can keep with oscars, and which ones I cant:

4 Silver Dollars (all around 6 inch)
2 Silver Sharkes (1 6 inch, 1 4 inch)
3 Angel Fish
2 Cory's
6 Mollies
6 Red Rainbows
12 Rainbow Cichlids
2 Pangasius (1 about 12 inch, 1 bout 6 inch)
1 Pleco (12 inch)
1 Feather fined Cat fish (8 inch)
2 Clown Loaches (3 inch)
3 Clear Cat fish
6 Barbs, sorry dont know what they are called all I know is that grow to around 3-4 inches.

My tank is 6ft x 2ft x 2ft, I have a fluval 305 and Eheim Pro 2 filters, I also have 2 300 watt heaters, and a SEIO super Flow Pum (would I still need this)

How many Oscars can I keep in my size Tank or is it best to buy say 6 or more and wait for the young to pair up and then retrun the rest to my LFS, and keep one pair.

Any help is most welcome.

Many Thanks

Ray

hi Ray

There are many other members of this forum that know much more than me but i am in a similar boat to you, albeit with a smaller tank but i plan to keep an oscar, so have been researching

Already in the tank i have:
SD's
clowns loaches

from my research they would be fine with an oscar..other members would advise you on the rest but apart form the cats and plecs, not much i should think....i have been advised with the CL's to make sure they are of decent size as they can get stuck in the oscars throat, many times i've heard that you can keep an oscar with anything that doesnt fit its mouth, obviously this is a slight generalisation..

I plan to get one oscar and one of diff types of cichlids e.g. 2/3 out of sev, blue acara, JD, convict, firemouth, chocolate cichlid
Most people advise 1 oscar or 6 and more, tank size permitting...i think many people use the method you suggest for finding pairs, just make sure you have somewhere to move the other oscars

6 Red Rainbows REHOME
12 Rainbow Cichlids REHOME

What i would do is buy six juvi oscars from lfs<speak with them to see if at some point you can return 4........
let them mature and hopefully you should find a pair from this then return the rest.....

So i would say

6 juvi oscars to start<MAKE SURE YOU FIND WHO PAIRS AND RETURN THE REST>
4 silver dollars
2 silver sharks
1 plec
1 Feather fined Cat fish

Personally i would not bother with more cichlids,,,,,i know better than anyone about cichlid aggrestion, ive found its best to stick with one species unless you have a huge tank!!!!!!!

those pangasius grow huge so i would be inclinded to rehome them :good:
see
http://www.fishforums.net/content/Other-Ca...18/Pangasiidae/

make sure filterations great and water changes every week, get a good food source like hilraki pellets or of similar status,,,,
dont feed them feeder fish<not worth it>

Hiya,

Thanks for the replies. Is that deffo with the Rainbow Cichlids (Herotilpia Multispinosa), they are my fav fish.

How large do Oscars mouth's get? At 3 inches I was hopeing the Clown Loaches would be big enough. Please dont think I am questioning your knowledge, I am just trying to save some of my favourite fish.

I have a Fluval 305 and a Eheim Professional 2, would both of these filters be good enough or should I get another?

Thanks

Ray

well that many rainbow  jsut keep four and see what happens,<to many cichlids in one tank
i wouldnt risk it with oscars and small clowns, as a 1inch oscar in six months could be easily 8-9inches and the clown still 3inches, i know because i did the same, caught my 8inch oscar trying to nibble on the clown<so removed them to my other tank,,,

filteration sounds ok :good:
just ensure you keep up with a good tank cleaning resigme :good:
water change water change water change water change :good:

I have to agree with Nelly 100% Oscars have huge mouths and really don't mind what goes in them. I used to keep them and even a juvenile five inch O will try to eat smaller Clowns. I think as far as the Rainbows go, I would go for it if thats what you really want. But exercise extreme caution as they grow together. Not sure I would have 12 in with six juvenile O's but thats up to you. One trouble you may get is feeding time, once an Oscar has learned that its dinner time the Rainbow's won't get a look in, so make sure you keep an eye on things there. Good luck with the restocking mate and let us know how it goes.
