Plants and snails have a habit of blocking the bubble flow on my Nutrafin ladder, and occasionally bubbles will collect apparently of their own accord. If I notice this then I can sort the issue out (and/or clean the ladder) but I would rather avoid this long term as once or twice it has been a good day (e.g. go to work, come back, see the bubbles being blocked and the CO2 level is down, no pearling etc) before I notice the problem.

I'm wondering if a ceramic diffuser would remove the likelihood of this happening? Are there ones that would work OK (and are cheap!) with the Nutrafin kit and are they likely to give a good diffusion rate in comparison with the ladder? I am guessing that raising/lowering the height of the diffuser in the water will allow more/less CO2 to enter the water and hence give a vague amount of control over the CO2 level? The Nutrafin kit lets you move the bubble entry point onto the ladder to achieve the same effect....I've also seen the spiral diffusers which are said to work well with home made kits, are these as good of an option?

I use the Aqua Cup Diffuser, 8.99 from aqua essentials, with my nutrafin set; it is a vast improvement on the ladder, and excellent value for money imho.

Bubbles appeared immediately, no problems on change over.

My snail and shrimp sit on top of it all the time without any loss of bubbles.

Excellent, it is also way smaller than the ladder so more space for plants :)

I use Aquatic Magic's Rhinox 2000 which is an inch across, with 2 Nutrafin kits

Diffuser arrived today, now installed. I haven't so far noticed any bubbles but it has pushed the small amount of water around the u-bend so I guess pressure is building up. Possibly a bad idea was that I also changed the yeast mixture this morning, so it is around 3 hours old. Diffuser has been in 30 minutes, time will tell :)

i had mine on a ceramic diffusor, but because the pressure is low it was making a really annoying chirping sound all the time, depends where your tank is i guess but mine is right by my bed and it was really annoying, just had a spiral diffusor arrive today and hopefully it'll be better

Mine is in the living room, but 2-year old daughters, TV and music generally hide any other noise :)

ha ha fair enough :D

although i must say the chirping of the diffusor made a nice change to just having Ian's snoring to sleep through ;)

I don't find Ian keeps me awake from his snoring, I'd be worried if he did ;)

My wife doesn't snore much either, but I really don't think she'd appreciate an aquarium in the bedroom, she isn't particularly convinced of the two I already have downstairs!

i dunno, it is pretty noisy!! :hyper:

i'm not particularly convinced of the two we have in the bedroom, i do like them but i kind of wish there was somewhere else they could live

Well, my diffuser is currently bubbling, no chirps. One teeny stream of teeny bubbles leaving the diffuser.

My wife seems to have forgotten that she did agree that the only way I could get a larger tank (think 6-7') was if we ever re-do our kitchen (loads of walls to knock down etc)....there would be an excellent position for a nice 7x2x2 tank but apparently she never said anything of the sort...hmm :)

awwwwww

although you know you just gave me any idea, we've got to knock down the wall between the bathroom and hallway and re-build it the next week or so, could build a tank into it :D always wanted a built in tank

although i'm not sure if i'd always want people in the hallway to be able to see what's going on in the bathroom

Hmm...fair point! Still, if you get any pictures ;)

I would love one built in to the wall that would be next to the dining table, superb view whilst eating. I've even started thought-based scaping ideas!

ha ha there's no chance really as we're doing the house up to sell, but maybe in the next house! :D

We're not moving...hence the plan for a large tank!
