Hi again...

Can anyone explain to me why my tank is getting hotter and hotter each day for no reason???? I am not using a heater, my tank is cycled, and we are approaching fall in New England, US. So it's fairly cold out now! I don't keep my light on and the temp in my house is around 73*F. Lately, for no reason, my tank will show a temp of ~82F! Ive changed the water and made it colder, kept the hood up, and shut off the filter and aerator - the temp is still spiking!!! Is there any reason this may be happening?!

Perhaps pick up another cheap spirit thermometer for the inside of the tank. Perhaps yet another cheap one for the air in the room near the tank - perhaps that room is somehow getting warmer than you think and you're just reading the thermostat in a different room. These kinds of things are hard to diagnose over the internet - you may just have to keep trying to be creative figuring it out. Be sure to enlist the help of other members of the household or friends.

If it gets too hot, freeze a few drink bottles filled with water and float them in the tank. It will help bring the temp down without the fish having to deal with thermal shock.

I've been having trouble with my tank temp. To begin with I had a couple of dodgy heaters, but then I was still having problems caused by the leaving the light on.

Because the water was warm, I had the water level very low (to get better aeration), but that was causing a lot of water to be splashed out of the tank, which made me keep the lid closed.

I've since raised the level of the water, to stop the splashing, and left the feeding flap open, and now the tank temp is much better.

The room temp is about 25C, and the tank is finally settling down to around that.

I had used water changes in the past, but this frozen water bottle idea sounds great. I definitely use that in the future if I have more problems.

If i ever have a too hot tank I just use those plastic freezer blocks you put into cool box's. I always have two or so in the freezer not for the fish but for picnics.
