Career advice

Ah, Office Space. The counselor wasn't totally wrong. The only trouble with the "million dollars" scenario is that I've never figured out a way to make a living hunting elk, building bows, composing music, going for long walks in the mountains, and fly fishing...
Writer . You should be a writer . You could be the new Pat McManus .

Those are noble ideas, @WhistlingBadger . But we're not nobles, we're peasants. That complicates life.

I'm a writer. But you would have to be in the rare group of successful writers to make a living that would allow the elk population to take a hit. I figure I'm wealthy now with my little pension, my beat up car and my paid off house. I can have this fishroom I enjoy. I can help my kids, though not as much as I'd like to in this economy. I can take walks with my dog, and no major body parts have fallen off me. If I'm frugal, I get to take trips. Time is an incredible part of wealth.

Unfortunately, I couldn't live like this when I was 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 - I had to do things I wouldn't have chosen. Now, I don't have to work to pay off banks or mortgages, pay landlords, or spend 40 hours plus a week selling my skills. This is nice while it lasts.

True words Man , true words . Time is indeed a great part of wealth . The best of all things in retirement is the almost overwhelming amount of free time . I haven’t had that since grade school and I like it ! I , for one , am going to enjoy it to the full while it lasts .
