This may be a stupid question but it came to me the other day so im going to risk looking stupid and ask :p

obviously carbon removes treatments and toxins from your water but can it remove the good stuff as well as the bad?

For instance does it remove dechlorinator and filter bacteria solutions?

Sorry if this is a really stupid question but curiosity got the better so i had to ask :p

It can remove ferts and such, I only use it to remove meds from the water and after that it comes right back out. It wont kill off your bacteria or anything like that.

The facts about carbon in a nutshell:

In almost any fw tank adding will improve the water to some extent. Many tanks the amount it will do so will not be enough to justify the need or cost.

It wont remove yourplant ferts. But don't take my word for it, read what Tom Barr aka plantbrain writes in this thread http://www.plantedtank.net/forums/showthread.php?t=146424
Which concludes with this:

Myths: it's detrimental to planted tanks: removes all the Fe, other ferts..............etc.
