and maybe a redtail black shark?

That gourami is capable of 8 and being quite hefty if healthy and fed. it will get agressive when feeling cramped. i watched a pink one destroy an angelfish in a 38 gallon.

They were the only ones in there. that was then this is now. 40 gallons isnt as big a number as you think it is. and you have to think about where each fish swims, top? middle? bottom dweller? do they like to hide under things? in grasses? before you can even think about what actual types of fish to put in, you need to figure out what kind of environment your going to build. Different plants require different water parameters as do many of those fish.

Make sure you head on over to the planted section of the site, where underwater gardening will be redefined for you.

Edit: I just remembered once i saw this amped up massive gourami once

Just for the laughs friend.

Tank is already planted. Its high tech with almost 4 watts per gallon, co2 and has plant fertilizer substrate

Top:
Gourami - wow did u mean 8 inches well thats kinda big so mayb a pearl gourami or a giant gourami(Rainbow)
african butterfly fish

Middle:
Bosmani rainbows
angel fish
apistos
fire mouth cichlid

bottom:
synadontis or pleco
red tail black shark

tank is planted with driftwood, has caves. PH is around 7.4
all fish will be bought locally except the apistos which would be added last

bump. I want to get fish soon. sry don't usuallly bump things

i wouldn't go for gourami actually. if you're looking at the smaller species some people do find them hard to keep alive (especially dwarf gouramis).

if you're looking at the top, middle, bottom way, angels would occupy both the top and bottom IMO. so you're safe not considering fishes for the top layer. if not, ever considered hatchets? i think 48g would hold quite a number of cories which is quite a sight if you see them scurrying across the floor.

so is the stocking alright then. I have had dwarf gouramis before. One died because a hole in the head. The other lived a long time. I don't think a red tailblack shark and cories would mix. Also a school of hatchets would leave me overstocked. I was actually thinking of dropping the gourami for another angel but i do like the pearl gourami and the rainbow gourami.
