I just returned from work to find a gang of my fish including a yellow lab, murdering a fellow yellow lab including eating his eyes.

Wow sorry to hear it, I`ve only got my first fish Friday and I`ve been explaining to people about there aggression and lack of tolerance to other fish one of the questions was how do they kill each other ? So they physically set about biting a fellow fish to death ?

There wont be one person out there without a mbuna cichlid that has been nipped or pecked, chances are was that your lab was a dominent or subdominent fish that has lost its status and its become pay back time. :grr:

I have found when a cichlid loses its place in the pecking order all the lower fish take a shot at him/her to see if the can gain a rank in the aquarium.

( take em while they are weak)

Most species will actually pick on a fish that is weak or ill as they attract predators. I suspect the lab in question was either extremely sub-dominant or suffering from an infection/disease. Once a fish is dead, it just becomes a source of food so it could have been intact when it died and the rest have basically been eating it.

or maybe like most other fish *even guppies* the fish was pretty much dead and they were just eating it

go to walmart you'll see what im talking about
