Hi everyone! I just got into posting without even introducing myself. I got into fish keeping when my boyfriend moved and needed a temporary place for his 10 gallon cold water fish tank. So I took them in and fed them for a few months, although he came over to clean them. When they left I was a little sad. The boyfriend took this to mean that I wanted a tank of my own and when my birthday came up he gave my friends the idea of getting my a gift certificate to a pet store so I could get my own. They got one to Petcetera (Canadian chain that almost died out recently until someone bought them and reopened some of the stores) since Petcetera usually had the best deals on startup tank kits. Now, I wasn't really sure that I actually wanted my own tank but the boyfriend said he'd help me and to help clean it, etc. Plus, gift certificates are generally not returnable and there was nothing else in that store that I wanted. And although I only had enough for a 10 gallon + a few accessories, I decided to get a 20 gallon anyway. Lol. Anyway, it's been through a few changes over the last 2.5 years, but currently I just changed over to sand and came over here to find out more and to learn more in general.

Stock as of right now includes 6 platys and 2 dojo loaches. I also have a too-small betta tank, but no space to upgrade him right now. Hopefully sometime in the next year or so. I would guess I've had him for 2 or so years, maybe a bit less and we're just clearing up a bout of popeye......thank goodness it's actually clearing up. My fault.....I got slack with the cleanings.

Anyway, tl;dr: Hi! And I look forward to learning more!

Thanks! And, it hasn't. Lol. I did a 30% water change yesterday, and will do the sand sifting and another water change tomorrow. :) I "lost" a loach earlier tonight, but he's back out now, so obviously one of them has figured out the joys of burrowing in the sand. Heh.

Welcome to TFF! Hows that sand shifting going? :hi:

Sand sifting?

Stirring up the sand on occasion to prevent pockets of gas (can't remember the actual term for it) and to bring food and poop up to the top to siphon out. :)

right, thought it may be that, for me,however, the problem is moot, as khuli loach and pleco keep it well turned over. incidentally, has anyone ever heard of gas causing problems (i know it will in theory)? I've never read of it, with confirmation, anyway.

I've got a couple dojo loaches that like to burrow in the sand. Well, in theory they do. They're slowly learning the joy of it. Lol. Anyway, if it turns out they do it a lot I might not worry about doing it as frequently myself. :) As for the gas, I'm really not sure. However, even if it /was/ mostly harmless, from what I understand it can smell like rotten eggs...and I'd just really rather never smell that myself. Heh.
