I've got my eye on a nice second hand tank, now aside from the minor problem that my partner has already forbidden me to buy it :p, the owner says they have been using it for marine.

Is it safe to use a salty tank for freshwater & is there any special cleaning I would have to do?

I am using a tank that was a marine tank with no problems.  I did a standard thorough clean that I would do with any new tank before using and have had no problems.  Very small concentrations of salt wouldn't hurt most tropical fish and some would like it. I can only think it would be pretty minimal.

My discus have spawned five times so far in an ex-marine tank. If that isn't an indication that it's ok, I don't know what is ;)

I too have used a previous marine aquarium for tropical. Just cleaned as normal.

yes should be fine, just clean it (without soap haha) and it'll be good. let her cycle and your on your way to having a nice tank.

Thanks for the answers!

I don't think I will be getting this particular tank due to size and lid access, thought long and hard about it and I will keep on looking for my perfect tank!  At least now I know I can look at ex-marine tanks too.

If you tell us what you're looking for and your budget we could let you know if we spot something.
I'm always looking at what's on the market.

I'm looking for the biggest tank I can get that will fit into a 70cm wide space!  This one was the biggest I've ever seen at 150L!
Otherwise something like a Juwel Lido 120L would be great.  Don't worry, I'm keeping my eyes peeled too!  I'm happy to keep waiting until the right tank comes along.

Actually, if anybody spots a Juwel Lido near Reading on AquaristClassifieds then please do let me know, I'm scared to look at that site since it infected me with two viruses!
