Can I Syphon With A 15ft Hose

So let me get this straight - you can siphon water OUT using a standard hose? I may need to get one..... I don't understand how it works without sucking and I am definitely NOT sucking... lol.... yeurgh fish poo! Surely this thumb over the end of the hose thing takes forever? My hose would be stretching through to the kitchen I think and into the sink, so gravity ain't gonna be on my side... any other suggestions? Can'y afford a python right now :(

for my tank in the house i use a power head
small pipe on the intake (dont go to close to the gravel/sand)
hose pipe on the outlet to the drain outside (works a treat)
plus stops me getting my ear chewed cos ive got water every where

i heard someone say that if you turn the hose on in the tank then turn it off and disconnect it will create a backflow, therfore there is no need to suck, i havent tried this tho,,,im still a sucker  or if im really lucky i can catch one of the boys to do it for me!!:)

That will work, some people find this out by accident. You only have to get the water to clear the edge of the tank & go below the surface level to start the siphon, so the risk of a mouth full of water with 15' of hose is pretty minimal.

Tried sucking out water with the hose , left it for 10 seconds, the pipe fell out and water went all over the floor

im not laughing,im smiling hehehe

Lucky there was no fish in the tank, by the time i recovered the tank had only about 20% water left but i had a experience of how tasty fish water is

If your refilling the tank directly from the outdoor tap isnt water with Chlorine being added to the tank? Do you add Dechlorinator directly to the tank after the water change? Does this have a negative effect on the A-Bacs and N-Bacs? Or is it ok to do?

It would be a hell of a lot easier for me to just get the hose into the tank to fill up than lug 10 buckets across the living room!!

everyone i know with big tanks adds dechlor straight to the tank and fills up with a hose from the garden tap :good:

no problems at all in doing this

this is exactly as i do it now for the oscars, fill it up with the hose and add the declorinator staraght into the tank, theres nothing that would get me back to using buckets again

I had no idea you could put cold water straight into the tank  I thought you would risk giving the fish thermal shock if they swam into it?

Nah, most fish are not bothered by cold water, IMO most of them seem to enjoy it. In the wild changes in water temp are normal. I've swam in a spring fed lake and around 10 ft down you have a sudden 15*f drop in water temp all in around one foot. Water is way to cold for me too stand, but the fish never seemed bothered by it.

i have to admit, i thought the same, before i did it, but they dont mind at all,i thought they ( Buddie and Jambo) would sulk for days, but nope, all fine here
