Hi guys i'm new to this forum and new to fish keeping , I started just before christmas (2013) with a Fluval Roma 125, I'm getting on not too bad , Just today I was in my local fishkeeper store and I was admiring the coral display in a marine set up and it set me wondering if coral rock can be put into a tropical setup and if it can would the coral live or would it just be decorative ( either is fine). I just want to know if it's safe to put it into an aquarium which already has fish in it?

Marine coral in a freshwater tank would die in short order probably polluting the tank horribly in the process not to mention the fact that you would be adding a quantity of (essentially) seawater to a freshwater system - I definitely wouldn't go down this route. Dead coral might be OK although it's primarily composed of calcuim carbonate (or limestone) which might make the water in the tank more alkaline which would not be to the liking of a lot of tropical fish (not all though).

A better alternative might be a nice bit of bogwood, and few rocks and some plants.

Thanks Nick I have had live plants in it but they are annoying me and I do have couple of bits bogwood I think i'll take one out and put some rocks in instead

Unless that coral rock comes from lake nicaragua then don't. It'll die and foul your water and may even kill your tank inhabitants

OK, well bogwood and plants is one approach - the nice thing about this hobby is there are so many to choose from! If you really want 'coral' why not get some artificial ones - cheaper AND safer!
