a few more days most probably, you must go out and get a whitespot treatment tomorrow. and get the ram back in the tank

Here's the thing: GBRs have specific needs. They are a sensitive fish. They need to be in a filtered, heated, cycled tank, not a cup. I suggest your parents do their research on how to keep a healthy aquarium before putting fish lives in their hands. I'm sorry to sound like a jerk, but that just particularly bothers me. I get really upset when people just buy live animals without knowing that they have to invest time and research into keeping them alive. I hope you can be a positive influence on your parents, and you're going to be very, very proud of yourself when you understand and apply the concepts of a well-balanced aquarium holding as sensitive a fish as GBR. Put that baby back in the tank, and change the water at LEAST once per week (if you aren't already)! The previous advice was good, too - if the fish got whatever it's got while in the tank, then...it's in the tank! Having a pet is an awesome responsibility, and if your parents don't want to spend money on another fish, they might want to truly GIVE you that awesome responsibility, have you buy your own fish and learn from your own mistakes, which is totally the way to go!

I am also wondering why one would put one female in a tank, since they have more dull colors than the males, and I would think she would be stressed and lonely without a mate.

in my experience a female is normally better, because theyre generally better behaved than the males, and wont cause a problem
