Can I go to the store and buy a coconut cut it in half boil it for 2 weeks and then put it in my aquarium and will it do anything to the water quality of is it unsafe for the fish

Interesting question! I have no idea what it takes to turn a fresh coconut into something more like a little cave of wood, lol.

Clearly you'd want all evidence of the white meat gone and the little hairy strings on the outside gone probably...

I'm sure someone will know, it's great having hundreds of members.

Yes, you can use threads to establish moss on all sorts of things. In planted tank competitions you'll see moss used for many interesting effects.

I made some coconut caves a while ago, can see them here:

Got them from tescos. Cut them in half, dig out the coconut, slam them onto the concrete outside and they chip the make arches for the fish to swim through, no need to cut openings. I boiled the shells for about 30 mins then put them straight into the tank.

I have got one from tesco, halfed it took out the white gave a clean by leaving it in a bucket for 24 hrs of boiling water job done. I have also got 5 from ebay for £3 each. I would defo defo just buy them ready made for the hassle it took to get from tesco :good:

They don't need boiling; pouring boiling water over them a time or tow will be enough. I've heard that plecs and snails like the coconut, and the hair can stay on too, if you want it.

You spend £15 on ebay , i spend and extra £2.50 on a weekly shop and 10 mins with a handsaw and screwdriver... :D Maybe i should sell some on ebay if people like you are happy to pay! :D

10 min per coconut to get the same result = 50 min work or 1 min to order at £15 i get paid more then that per hour so no brainer really
