My tank is now fully cycled, and i have 6 zebra danios in, just to start with.

I want to do a 30 - 40 % water change.

I wasnt sure if i was able to do the following

1. empty the old water out
2. put the dechlorinator in
3. get the hose pipe and put the water straight in

I wanted to do it this way as it would save me loads of time. Just didnt know if it would harm anything to put the dechlorinator in before i put the water in.

Hope this makes sense

Thanks

If you do it that way, try not to use water that is too much colder than the tank, or do it in small steps so your heater can work in between additions.

Do you have a gravel cleaning siphon? Performing a gravel clean with the outgoing water is an essential among the good habits we recommend to beginners for their water change technique. The feeling that one is "too busy" and needs to perform a pure water change without a gravel clean to save time is the most common thing admitted to by beginners who eventually come back and say their tank has problems from lack of maintenance. (Probably this is not a problem for you... Just a friendly check :D )

Im interested in this method - how long does the dechlor work for? Do you need to get the new water in quickly before the dechlor stops working?
Also regards dosing - do you have to dose for the entire volume of your tank rather than just the volume of water you are adding for it still to be effective?

It usually is recommended that you treat the whole tank volume rather than just the amount of water to be added then add right away. I have done it where I start the hose running and add some of the dechlor then more and more in 2 or 3 separate squirts while it is filling. I'm just a bit more nervous than most people with the method so I sort of treat as I am adding by spacing the dechlor additions.
