Can I Add Moss Balls Into My Filter?

I have some moss-ball bits left over from a ball I split recently, and had an idea...

My work tank runs a small topless hob filter (tank capacity is only 8 litres) and I thought it might be an idea to add the left over bits to the media housing area. They would be infront of the existing media, and would not cover the whole thing. I figure its not going to cause any harm, but will it do any good?

I am assuming it will just act at the very least as another form of physical filtration, and perhaps add some small biological benefits too..

Most people will not run open topped filters, so I presumed that it is something that probably has not been done very often, if at all.

Your exactly right, they will act as another physical structure to mechanically filter out particulate waste, but there will be little/no biological benefit, as the balls will quickly get 'covered' and won't be able to photosynthesise.

If you had a sump tank, with plants, it would be orth adding them to that as a possible means of biological filtration...
