I have 3 green severums in a 55 gallon and they are still small (like 1-2 inches) so for now they are fine. However, one of them is a little larger than the other two and is getting aggressive. I've read that 55 gallons is okay for one severum but would one be lonely by himself or not?

55 gallons is okay for one of the smaller species of Severum like the mouth brooders or rotkiel but for common green sevs and golds etc you need at least a 75 g as they get much bigger.

But as for keeping sevs alone they are fine. I had 3 sevs together at one point and had more problems than ever. In captivity and smaller tanks (ie under 150g) its often best to keep larger cichlids like Sevs as single specimens.

i will be upgrading in a year or 2? Or Hopefully Faster. But if I can't, what is a good single mainfish for a 55 gallon?

Cichlid wise quite a lot of options really it just depends on what you like - stuff like Ellioti and Firemouths do well and their rarer relatives. Yellow convicts are always nice and more peaceful than regular cons. If you want a wet pet a Green Terror with a few dither fish usually do well in a 55g.

Then from South America you have fish like Festivums, Port Acaras, Blue Acaras and the rarer members of the old Aequidens family like Aequidens Patricki. You also have a few geophene species - like Cupid cichclids and Guainacaras that would work in groups as would Geophagus Iporangensis - though those are quite rare.

If you do like the Aequidens Patricki or Geophagus Iporangensis wildwoods have some in so might be worth looking because there not that common.

Or you could go for a big group of Biotodoma wavrini or Biotodoma cupido which are in wildwoods aswell

Aren't green terrors aggresive? Would one attack my 2 pictus, rhino pleco and rope fish?

Ah I did not realise you had other fish in the tank already. So yeah count the GT out though there is a slim chance of it working they are all tough fish.....
