Humor me? Can Female Bettas blow bubble nests?

My betta has the ovi white dot under her belly just as my other female does. Twice now she's been given Indian Almond Leaves. Both times, on the following day, I have found a bubble nest!

I've read contradicting info. First, that sometimes juvi males can have white dots and second, that females can blow nests.

Next time I take her out for her tank cleaning, I can place her next to another betta to see her beard better. . .when I tried the sorority, she was the ONLY betta (out of six) who came out of the ordeal without a single nick on her fins.

Thoughts? Girl or Boy?

i'd still say girl, as girls can make bubble nests, and have also heard of peoples on here helping the male with his nest!

but, the only sure way to tell is the beard i suppose!

The IAL must be some good stuff. Maybe I should try making some tea out of it? lol

ETA - I put a 4 X 4 " makeup mirror in front of her (gotta make it fun for her - girly wise!) and she only mini-flared for a second. She's flared much more before when around other bettas. She kept looking in the mirror and then back up at me trying to determine what my motivation was.

Will try again later.

Just tried again. . .

Her beard is TINY, but it seems to be on the sides and slightly around the bottom. Including her tail she's about 1.25 inches long.

Post up pics! :) then we can help you decide, I have never seen a female build a bubble nest and have owned a few, but it's not to say they can't! as for the ovi spots I think the way to tell is if it is pure white and sticking out a bit it's a girl, males have a similar looking spot when young but it's never to my eyes a pure white dot more like a grey bump :S how old is she/he now?

i cant remember who, but someone tried to breed their betta, and a female kept asking the male to breed, but he was hiding under the polystyrene as he was so used to be chased by her, he did slightly build the nest, and the female helped, which made him want to build,

i am not sure, but i think it may have been Kia?

I have no idea about her age. She was purchased at Petco. The deal is her tummy IS white, but I do see a bump there, so I would guess it's a girly bump (if that's what you'd want to call it - lol).

Okay, will post a photo here in a sec.

She's definetly the one who wears the pants in the family. Neither of my males have any interest in breeding (actually one did while in his bowl, but when I moved him up to a tank, he quit).

Okay, photo of her. ..

Here's a shot of all her fins.

Sorry so blurry. My cat was rubbing up against me while I was taking the photos. She must be hungry! ;)

Yes it's a girl  that ovi spot is very apparent, she is just very ready to breed hence the bubble nest! saying that I just remembered one of my females did build a bubble nest :hyper: it's when I was attempting to breed once and I had her in a jar waiting to introduce her to the male but she couldn't wait and dropped her eggs in the jar and promptly built a bubblenest to put them in

I'm tempted to put one of my males in and see what happens!!!

Note that I change 100% of her water every two-three days and since getting her the ONLY time she constructs the nests is when I put in the Indian Almond Leaf. Must be an aphrodisiac!

They need to both be conditioned for at least 2 weeks by feeding live foods before attempting to introduce, breeding is stressful for bettas and they need to be physically fit before they do, even though she is acting as though she is ready she will still need conditioning as she will most likely get badly battered by the male, if you have prepared them already for breeding then ignore me :look: almond leaf is a good tool for breeding, she looks as though she needs to fatten up more with eggs too.

Thanks for the info. I just put him in a clear cup and placed him against the glass of her tank. She became extatic. Should I move her home so she can see the male betta? Right now, they're in seperate rooms.

They don't have to see each other whilst conditioning but it won't hurt if they can, she will probably swell with eggs quicker if she can see him  and they will become more familiar with each other.

Females Can Make very Nice Nests, My SB Female is currently making a Lovely Nest in her Cube

Okay. . .I'm going to think about this for a few months. lol Right now, I'm going to stick with my original plan of mating my guppies and see what happens with them.
