Can Cichlids Kill Tiger Barbs?

I got two large tiger barbs (almost as big as adult convicts)2 weeks ago. They semed very active and healthy, always among the first to come up to the surface for food. Last week I found one dead in the evening, came home from work today and found the other dead too.Neither showed any sign of injury or disease and both had fed well in the morning.
Could the cichlids (2 female convicts, 3 jewels and a fast growing unknown young Malawi)have killed the barbs? The tank is fairly peaceful and the cichlids seemed to ignore the barbs, no fighting or even chasing. The barbs were part of a tankfull of neglected unwanted fish I took in so I've no idea how old they were.It's possible the barbs were old and died naturally but seems too much of a coincidence.

Yes they certainly are capable, i had a male con who killed a few fish at breeding time, jewels are aggressive aswell...
but you say a tiger barb as big as a convict? thought tiger barbs only got like 2inchs at a push 3inches?

I didn't even know you could mix barbs and cichlids together lol. They were probably attacked but also could of been old since you're saying they were that big.

Tiger barbs are a very fast robust species. While it is possible that they were killed by the cichlids, they would have to of been caught off guard. Usually it's the tiger barbs that do the killing

Yes that's why I put the 3 inch barbs in cichlid tank not with livebearers.The cons are both female and the jewels (sex unknown) have shown no interest in breeding. Not sure if jewels are fully mature, they are almost 12 months old.

I would be very surprised if any of the fore-mentioned fish killed the Barbs. If there is no sign of fighting or ripped finns or stuff, then it is almost 100% it is not them. Most likely is the change od environments hasn't agreed with stressed out fish, as you say they weren't well maintained before you got them?
