Can Brother And Sister Fish Mate

im really surprised so many people are against breeding brother&sister fish. i mean, when the average person breeds cichlids do they not go to the fish store, find a male and female, then breed? isn't it extremely likely that those 2 would be related? i know its far from ideal, but isn't the brother and sister thing by far the most practiced among your everyday fish-people (not breeders).

I breed all my fish brother & sister i don't have any problems with any of my fish by breeding them this way
when people have problems with fish and say its down to inbreeding its just a load of crap inbreeding fish is not a problem its just some people cant keep or breed fish

I personally don't have a problem with it. It works, you just can't let it go on for too long. I bought 6 endlers. I have a tank of probably around 50 of their offspring that do interbreed with each other. This works and fry do not come out deformed as of yet. The diversity of genes will become reduced if it is allowed to continue on for too long. This doesn't mean stopping them, it just means I need to buy a handful of unrelated endlers to add to this colony that way we keep introducing new genes ocassionally and keep the colony genetically diverse overall. A lot depends on how long you can allow interbreeding to go on for. Mainly for example how many fish you started with. The more fish initially the more diversity you have on your side and the longer inbreeding is viable before you need to introduce new genes.

introducing new genes may be a good thing but for me i dont do that i keep to the same fish i start with i have had some fish 15 years inbreed them and still no problem

I had a male & female guppy breed and once the baby grew big the parents were after all their kids so I had to separate them, and then the parents got back with each other and had another batch.

I know this is out of topic in some ways but have you heard of the liger, its a lion and tiger bred together and called it a liger. They are HUGE and way more friendly than the original lion and tigers. Here is a pic of one  put in google liger.

Also the Tigon (or Tiglon) where the tiger has the dominant gene (They had one in the Gerald Durrell zoo in Jersey a good few years back)
and the zedonk (or Zonkey)- cross between zebra and donkey

Mutation is fun!
