i got a crab hitchhiker when i bought live rock a few months ago

didnt seem to find him for ages, but he has since shed twice and gotten bigger

would reckon hes now about an inch, nothing is missing in tank tho

all snails and hermits accounted for

can some-one ID him, and willl he get any bigger and be a problem in the future?

its a D&D 24g set-up with just a bocolor blenny in it :good:

Hairy generally equals bad, but it is adorable. Could you stick him in a sump/fuge?

Did you have him walking on your carpet?

what makes this crab bad? i have one who lives in a cave at the front of my tank, and all he does is stick his claw out to scrape up some algee to eat at night.

I have an emerald crab and was told he would be fine he is now HUGE and I really regret buying it as he has caused me no end of problems :grr:
I would personally now get rid of any crab, just in case!! :sly:

Obviously don't mean hermits though

this is actually the shed skin from the crab and not the actual crab!

he has done a disappearing act in the tank and now i cant find the wee blighter

he was ID'ed as a gorilla crab?

potentially a baddie in the tank

will have to keep an eye out for him, and see if i can remove him

every time he sheds means hes getting bigger, and potentially a bigger problem

I think he should be fine as long as he doesn't start killing things.

I have an emerald crab as well. What kind of problems has he caused you? Mine is still small. I wasn't aware that they can be bad. I do know that the guy at the lfs where I bought him had a hell of time catching him, and there was only a few small rock in the center of the tank.

i was thinking that this crab is an emerald crab as well, just a different colour

he was out last night, and is actually WHITE with DARK BLUE face?

he has hairy legs like a emerald crab

hes eating stuff off the live rock like my other emerald used to do

and hermit crabs and snails were passing by him on the rock and he paid no attention to them :good:

so im thinking maybe hes ok :shifty:

hes not a huge crab, bout 3/4' of an inch?

would hate to get rid of something that turns out to be peaceful in the tank

Just a couple quick questions:

How big is your tank?

How big was the emerald crab when you first got it?

How big is the crab now? and

How long did it take for the crab to grow?

Thanks,

Jason

As my sister, Trod hasn't answered this yet, I will do so on her behalf - her tank is 26 uk gallons, she has had the emerald crab since the summer - it has been the cause of several rock falls which have been a nightmere for her  Last time I saw it had doubled in size :hey: and I am very glad I didn't buy one when she was persuaded by her other half to buy the thing  But, didn't think emerald crabs get hairy

Sure she will update you soon

I have an orca TL550

How big was the emerald crab when you first got it?

He was about half inch

How big is the crab now? and

About an Inch Body not including legs

How long did it take for the crab to grow?

He has been in tank for couple of months

Thanks,

Jason

He is growing at an alarming rate, because of his size he is able to move LR, which on two occasions has caused real problems in the tank with overnight rockfalls, he just doesn't stop eating, I haven't tried to catch him as yet, I am hoping he is now fully grown. I have just managed to get a couple of photos of him, he is around 3 inches long including legs. he has at least doubled in size since I got him.

 Sorry to hi jack your thread lukkylady

i just found that i have TWO crabs in my tank :shout: :shout:

in holes about each other ones the white one with a blue face, no hairy legs, suspect is a mithrax crab

the other is a BIG BLACK HAIRY crab

hes scary looking!

any ideas of how i get him out?

i have no sump

Try the glass trick -put a glass in your tank with some meaty food in over night, hopefully the crab will climb in to get the food but will not be able to climb out because of the slippery sides :good:
