I have struggled to find positive identification of male and female online, mine are apparently wild apistiogramma viejita, also they where in a tank befor with alot of columbian rams, so a little stressed and traveling means the colouring has not show through very well yet. But one seems to have a very slightly higher dorsal fin than the other. And very slight longer anal fin extending backwards, however i'm not over sure if its just me optical trickery or just the colours.

But any help with identifying males from females would be a great help. thanks

I believe females are smaller and yellow with black stripe males are bigger more colourfull

Im sure simeone will corrwct me if wrong above is going from my apisto agassizzi

Males are much more colorful, with longer fins. Females ready to breed will be yellow. Can you post pics?

I tried to get a couple photos just after the post, i have the lights off to help them settle so no good really, I think i have a male and female. The heads are slightly different, females looks less slanted/is more rounded, the males is more of a triangular slope. The males dorsal fin begins more predominantly with a the 1st few fonds black and pretrouding from the fin a little, the females slopes more gental at the begining. So i think i do have a male and female... but will have to confirm in a day or two while they settle, also i will try and get a photo of them! Difficult though as i have alot of cover and they seem to like it.

Cool both of mine are yellow hopefully will breed soon

If they're both yellow, you have two females.

Yeah its came pretty obvious its a male and a female... yellow is not particularly showing but markings are really good on them. The male though is not in a good way i think, he is just in the floating foliage pointing up at 45degrees, not eating or reacting to the lid opening or anything... the female is settled down lovely pottering round the bottom of the tank exploring the pots and rock and plant... anyone know whats up with the males behaviour?
