hi,

It started with my male betta after his first betta babies. Maybe he was exhausted taking care of the babies. He's got a big bump on the side of his head - near his left gills. I also spotted something transparent on his body, which looked like air bubble, but it didnt look like any external parasite I know. I thought it could be bacterial infection with fungus, so I treated him with Bactopur, then Esha 2000. Nothing changed and nobody else in the tank has it, only him. Then I took advice that maybe it could be just a bump or some kind of tumor, so I let him be, because he has never looked sick, very active and healthy eating. This week almost two months after I put him back in the tank, my another betta has bigger right gills. Sometimes I see at her and him same air bubbles, but not many - in the video it can be seen in 0:40. As you can see, they are both very active. In the video they are still together with other fishes before separation, because I put in the tank antiparasite treatment - which didnt help, because the bump and the gills look after some days still the same. So now they are separated in bettariums, I add salt, change water daily, temperature 30C.

The big aquarium is 300l, big external filter, plants, heater, change water often. I add salt to water also. So there should be no chance of parasites. I dont know, what to do... He looks just sick with it and I also refused puncture, because it is too close to his eye.

The photos are 2 months old, the videos are new. No one in my country could help me, so I try my luck on international forum. I will be thankful for ANY advice!!! .... :(

It's hard to tell in vid, and pics. So I will just ask a few questions?

Does the bump look hard, or solid?
Does the bump look like it's filled with fluid, or puss?
Is there and strands attached to the bump?
Any redness to the bump?
Does the bump have any pink areas?
Is there any whitness to the bump. Or a circling of white around the edges of the bump?
Is the bump area peeling away?
Is the bump smooth looking?
Does the bump resemble a cauliflower?

I put him out and touch it, it is solid, but not hard as stone. I would say - a little bit more tense naturally, but not hard stone.
If I can guess, I would say it is not filled with water. But pus or something more stiff is possible.
No.
No.
No.
No. But as you can see in the water it look like there is a white fungus around. If I put him out of water, there is no white. Just roundshape bump in dark colour of his skin.
No.
If I touch it is it pretty smooth - like it could be deeper under his skin.
No. It doesnt look like lymphocystis at all. It is roundshape with no branching.

I was wondering myself, that he could have external gill parasite which could dig deeper in his body. It is not as you can see in the area of the gill, but little bit closer to head.
Or then he could hurt himself during spawning and his vein could burst or something.
Another possibility could be tumor, but then the gill the problem with my female betta could be caused from fight or from another disease, which is not connected to the male. :(
Still it doesnt explain the white fungus coat around the gill. Or something completely different.

I dont know :(( You tell me, please :/

UPDATE - these are new videos from today. I hope you can see better the bump...

thanks a lot

Bless Him.
Is the betta breathing ok.

Can you isolate him to a hospital tank.
Are you able to get hold of antibiotics for your fish.

All you can do really is take the bacterial route, with antibiotics.
If it is a tumour there not much you can do.

He breaths ok, eats ok and moves actively.
He is already separated in the bettarium tank.
What kind of antibiotics?
So you think except the tumor it can be bacteria?

Anyway I guess I should not let him have another babies and eliminate him from breeding, right?
Would you recommend to try a puncture? You know, to see if there is something inside?

thank you for your reply.

I would go for an antibiotic which treats - gram positive bacteria, and gram negative bacteria. (Tetracycline).
Antibiotics should only be used in a hospital tank.

If you do preform a puncture, I would recommend preforming the procedure in a bucket. As we wouldn't want any fluid running into his tank water.
Just add some of his tank water to a bucket.
Also make sure the implement you use for the puncture has been sterilized.

Where should I buy this tetracycline? In drugstores or petshops?
Ok I will do.

Ok. I will not do it by myself, I have friend which is vet and she will perform the puncture.

Thank you very much !!! :)

bye
Jana

A vet a good place to get antibiotics from.
Not sure if you have excess to antibiotics from fish stores in your country.

I was asking my friend vet about tetracycline and she needs to know exactly which type or the name of the product. Because tetracycline contains many kinds of antibiotics. Can you please be more specific? thanks a lot

Looks more like external trauma to me. But i wouldn't be able to tell for sure until we inspect closely

He looked miserable last week, so I had to send him to the fish heaven :(
Over the night he just get worse, shocking. His scales sticked out, his color just vanished and he couldn't move. I thought he could make it, because .... the day before he was active looking.
Just in case it could be TBC or something viral I clean up whole quarantine tank. Who knows... Maybe I put him over too many medical treatments over a short period.

At least I have his 57 healthy babies. :((

Sounds like dropsy. It could be he was suffering from multiple bacterial infections and antiparasitic meds don't kill off bacteria, and eventually the infections got so bad he developed dropsy. Sorry for your loss, I'm sure he was a lovely betta :rip:
