Just want to add a female to my 4ft with my male betta, they may mate but thats not my aim.

People normally say not to. I have a male in with females,- but there are about 14 females in with him aswell as some other fish. The male swims around in amongst the females quite happily. He is a lovely natured boy. I'm not sure that there are many people who would say that it's ok to mix them though. Luckily there are some really helpful people on this forum who are sure to give you their great advice :)

I have a 1 male and 1 female together in my 140g tank. I have also been successful with keeping male and female betta together in a 30g tank. The reason you are finding conflicting info is because a lot of the time it depends on the personality of each individual fish. Plus tank size is a major factor. The bigger the tank, the more places for the female to chill out when she's sick of the male chasing her. I don't know if this info is true, but I read that male betta that have dark maroon faces tend to be more aggressive and also that wild caught betta are more aggressive too. Could just be a rumour though. It's just a risk that you'll have to take if you want to keep them together. I personally would advise against keeping them together in a small tank, but that's just my opinion. I would also have a back up plan on what to do with the fish if it doesn't work out. Most fish stores in my area will take them back but you should check with your local shop to make sure. Hope it works our for you!!

Good luck!

I would say it matters on the male and females in question since I have had females who would rather only be with other females and had males who would rather have no one else around but at the same time I have had males and females who get along just fine.

So really it matters on their personalities. But even then watch very carefully

I was always told not to put them together but I recently got a female to put in the same tank as my male. Of course I planned to get a divider and I did. But before I could get it in right they would slip through and tease eachother (no harmful teasing just showing off) and if they got sick of eachother they would slip to the other side.

They did that for a good day and a half. But now I have it up right and they stay close to eachother even with the divider between them. The female still tries to find ways to get slip through to get to him though. I might take it out after I get more plants growing in there that way my girl has places to hide, and this is in a 10 gallon tank. So I would say it's possible :)

Just depends on your bettas personality! Some males can be very aggressive, some can be sweethearts. Some females can be pains in the butts wanting everything their way, some dream hoping to have friends around. But if it works out, it'll be like a little love story :)

Thanks guys, i will go to my lfs tomorrow and see if they have any young females, my betta is so tiny :)

i wouldn't advise it, i have kept them together in the past but trust me it will go wrong sooner or later.

Why not just have a gourp of females and leave the male where he is?

I kept a male and female together as well they seemed to be getting along great just swimming around with no aggression after a week or so the female began getting very aggresive and nipping at the male so i seperated them. So as lilfishie said it'll happen eventually.

i have a male and a female living together in a fluval edge with no problems at all been together for months, so id say it depends on the fish
