Can A Filter Be Too Powerful?

I have added another filter to my Rio 125 due to concerns about the quality of the internal filter.

The LFS advised that the number on the front of the Fluval range refered to the output in litres per hour therefore the 305 marked as "300l" referred to 300 litres per hour. Unfortunately after setting this up I realised that the 300l referred to tank size and the throughput is 1000 liters per hour.

Given that my tank is only 125l is there any problems with this filter?

As long as the fish are not struggling to swim in the current it shoud be fine.
Can you turn the flow down to a lower setting.

If anything the fish seem to like the extra current especially the glass cats which are normally quite shy but spend ages this afternoon swimming into the current.

Personally i'd remove the juwel filter all together and insert the sponges into one of the fluvals compartments to retain the bacteria for a while as i find the juwel filter dont do much other than take up valuable room in the tank and hide the heater.

I automatically remove them from all my juwel tanks, especially the little rekord 60's quarentine tanks as the pump is pathetic and the housing is somewhat over exagerated... I find the smaller tanks do alot better with just a el cheapo fluval 2+, and the larger 120L up over with decent externals.. Like others say as long as the current isnt blowing the fish around and there is a calm area in the tank then you really cant over filtrate, but the fluval external range can have the flow adjusted via the aqua stop just dont reduce it over half way..

If you want a flat spot on the surface of the water in the tank just make a boom out of air tube with sucker cups each end, i use one in the trigon for the gouramis and my riccia etc.

Hi Kev
sorry to jump in hear but i have recently posted on the equipment area asking for advice on how to remove the black box from my juwel tank, any tips?
DD

cut the silicon and pull the box off, then clean the excess from the rear of the tank and be prepared to hoover all the crap that the Juwel filter misses from underneath in the dead area.

I have a 55 gallon with two filters pushing 600 gph. So basically if your filterion is not causing a whirlpool or making it hard for your fish to swim then your good to go. IMO the more filteration you have the better water quality you will have.
