weird, i remember back in 6th grade my teacher did this weird experiement where there was a small pot full of really warm water very close the the brim and the teacher kept adding sugar to it and the water level never rose until the water couldnt dissolve anymore sugar.
 
Salt definately raises volume, there was water all over the floor after adding it lol

Right, because the solubility of sugar in water (especially warm water) is nowhere near as high as that of sea salt and water. Somethin tells me your teacher didn't dump 5 cups of sugar in the pot ;)
