Using the calculator on this website I put in the dimensions of my AquaOne Evo 100 190L, which is 100cm x 40cm x 55cm which gives me 220L OR 58USG. Calculating the volume of the 5ft tank I'm getting, 5ft x 2ft x 2ft equals 566L or 150USG. The website of the tank manufacturer states the aquarium is 496L.

Are these calculations based on 'usable' volume, i.e. the tank may be 220L if filled to maximum capacity, but the actual volume of usable water is 190L even though the tank could hold 220L. So when giving tank sizes it is probably better giving dimensions rather than litres or gallons, isn't it?

You have to take into account the height of the water isnt going to be the height of the actual tank, its usually a good few cm's less, plus also the height of the substrate, water displacement etc. It is better to use measurements rather than manufacturer stated volume. Take the actual measurements with all the decor in and the water to the actual level.
