I recently made a diy C02 generator for my 29 gal. a few days ago and I was wondering how long it take to see results? My levels are around 15 ppm of C02. My lighting is still very low at under a watt per gallon, but I'll be upgrading it soon. I have various Crypts, Anubias, Hygrophilia and Java moss.

Thanks

With such low levels of light...c02 isn't really necessary. I don't think it would help at all, but it wouldn't hurt, since c02 doesn't help algae, but only plants.

Thats not what I've been told. C02 should help even low light tanks. Jimbooo advised me to add C02 before even adding more lighting.

Sorry for giving out wrong info, but i've heard that you need around 2wpg for c02 to give noticable help. Jimbooo probably said to add c02 before light because once you get more light, the plants will use it, and not algae. If you add light first, then algae will grow before your plants do.

I think thats what Jimbooo meant. If I added the lights first, I'd get more algae. I was under the assumption that it would help even with low lighting. Maybe I'm wasting my time adding C02 right now.

You don't need to add c02 but I don't see how it could hurt. I just got amazon swords and it's in my planted tank which has less than 1wpg(it's around .5wpg). I have seen noticable growth since two days ago when I got it. Good luck with the tank.

Thanks for your help. At least I know how to inject the C02 now. It's running nicely now. I'm sure I'll notice a difference when my lights are upgraded in a few weeks.

Co2 works very well for low light tanks, you can make do without it, but it does work well when used in low light tanks, you will see a difference in growth rates.

Thanks Zig, that's good to know. I did notice my Hygrophilia Polysperma pearling, and I've never seen anything do that in my tank before. Must be a good sign. :)

My plants have been doing great without it in a 1.3 wpg tank - im just going to stick an old nutrafin co2 in tonight and see what difference it makes... if nothing else it may help to keep the algae down!

I'd be curious to know how it works out by adding the Nutrafin C02 to your tank. I don't even have that much wattage, but since my lighting has always been weak, I stuck with low light plants. My plants do fairly well, but the growth is so slow. I'm going to try and bring it up to at least 2 watts a gal.
