Bye Girl

Mommy of bettas, good post. But I doubt she will bother answering your questions...

You pm'd me saying you were gonna breed guppies in a couple of months... yet now you say your female had babies. You said that you didn't have enough time to care for the bettas, yet you have enough time to care for the guppy babies?

In all fairness, though, there is that 99.999999% probability that the female guppy was already pregnant and FTB's tank was simply a convenient place to drop. Breeding guppies isn't really Rocket Science. Ignore the fry, chances are, they'll be eaten anyways and you won't have to bother yourself with raising this batch. If one or two make it, boom! You've bred guppies and raised fry successfully. An item to cross off your list of life accomplishments. It is the "survival of the fittest" method of fry rearing and you also provide your fish with a delightful source of live food.

Now line breeding to get or maintain a true strain is completely different (Actually akin to Rocket Science in difficulty) and for that you'll need the Holy Grail of Tropical Fish keeping, a virgin guppy. I've been told that they are merely legend, but there are rumors that some may actually exist. :shifty: If you're serious about breeding, Mommyof2bettas brings up some very good points. In addition, I wouldn't advise serious breeding from LFS stock. Usually, they are a genetic hodgepodge, and if you do get a strain, they are mostly of poor quality and possibly mixed in with other strains, not good. I would suggest going to Aquabid or a similar site and buying stock from there. More than likely you can get them segregated from a quality retailer, so you'll know exactly who you're breeding. All this takes patience and research, of course. Probably not the best thing to dabble into when you're just starting school. Just work on the pets you have for now. Trust me, it'll be more than enough.

Wow, how did we get from bettas to guppies? Fascinating thread.
