Im going back to england on friday and as i live near cruze hill i want to get some fish from either maidenhead aquatics or wildwoods. My question is ill be buying around 8 fish and wondered if it would be possible to put the all into bags with an oxygen tablet into a polystyrene box. Now here is the tricky bit i would be buying these fish at around 3pm ill then drive to liverpool and board the ferry at 8pm ill take the box on the ferry with me instead of leaving them in the car as its warmer on the boat. Ill then get back to northern ireland at about 6am and ill be home between 8-9am so the fish will be bagged and in transport from 3pm to say maximum 9am thats a total of 18 hours maximum. Is this going to be possible or will it be an expensive mistake????

shouldn't be a problem, i have had fish shipped overnight before and they all made it.
just tell the shop you are buying them from how far you are going and they should be able to pack them properly, if not walk out, and find one that can. take your own poly box with you, and some scrap newspaper to help insulate them more.
i have picked up fish from kilmarnock, put the water in the box, fish in the water, and had them in there for more than 10 hours without any problems too, so if you are in a car, this maybe the best way. just make sure that the water level is no higher than a 1/3 of the box height.

I was thinking of putting the fish in there bags in the middle of the box then filling empty bags with water and placing around the outside.

you can also get heat packs, but at this time of year it isn't necessary.
the heat from the bags the fish are in will keep the air in the box warm enough, just don't open it too often as the heat will escape.

Thats ok my main concern is that i dont want to fork out all that money and it all go wrong.

I`m not sure if this is possible but I`ve suggested this before.

Get one of those curver/plastic boxes with a lid put some tank water in along with a small internal filter and heater and power it with a power invertor that plugs into your car cigarette socket . (£29.99 see link below)

Would it work ? It may be too much hassle for you.

Thats a bit overkill I think, they will be fine in the bags/box for over 24 hours.

I would contact maidenhead aquatics via email and ask them how they receive their transported fish. A great deal of African cichlid stock in the UK and Ireland comes from eastern European countries, that a long drive so they must be insulated some how.

Also a good stockist like maidenhead should have a canister of compressed oxygen that they use to pump up the bags after the fish have been bagged.

In addition a friend of mine moved to Wales recently and brought his fish with him. He bought a power inverters on ebay.

The inverter allowed him to run a heater and an air pump. He put all his fish with lots of tank water in an icebox with the heater and airstone. He was travelling from cork to Dublin (4hrs), then the boat trip to Holyhead Wales (2hrs on the high speed ferry) then he had to drive to Newport in south Wales (4hrs). He didn’t loose a fish.

Just something for you to think about!

edit: It took me ages to find that image on ebay and I didnt realise that you had all replied by now, Sorry with coming up with the same ideas!

Ok so all i need to do is bag all the fish in seperate bags add an oxygen tablet in each bag. Then place all fish bags into the middle of a poly box then surround these bags in newspaper then put bags of water round the outside of these bags and then seal the box and not open it till i get to the other end?

Sounds good to me, you probably wouldn't need the oxygen tabs either, just fill the bag 1/3 water, 2/3 air and they'll be fine.

ok sounds like a plan. BTW im hoping to pick up
1xYellow lab 2xmaingano 2xsocolofi (does it matter if you mix albino and normal???) 2xred zebra 2xgreshakie 3xyellow tail acei

This would take my stocking to
5xyellow labs
3xmaingano
3xsoclofi
3xred zebra
3xgreshakie
3xacei

Although that is a good method in theory it isnt to good for me as the longest part of the journey will be on the ferry so my car engine will not be running so now power to run the pump and heater.
