The LFS on my postal round has got a tank containing ~25 Kribs in it, with two in gorgeous full bloom and keeping the other 23 to the other half of the tank!

I'm so tempted to get them as my next fish if they are still there come Saturday, but I'm still thinking about adding:-

  • Debauwi Catfish (very tempted, especially as this group is ~2 moths in LFS and fading away, but concerned about overstocking the tank and whether they would be intimidated by all the other boisterous/aggressive inhabitants)
  • Giants Danios (lovely as they are, I don't think I have the capacity for a 6-strong group of 10-12cm adults)
  • Humphead Glassfish
  • Lionhead Cichlids (if I can source them)
  • African Filter Shrimp
  • Panda Garra
  • African Butterfly Fish
  • African Bush Fish
  • "Orange-ringed Barb" (Puntius rhombacellus? These guys are a vivid orange with solid black vertical bars, quoted as reaching 6cm, but very "stocky." I'm thinking they might be "foeshi" species variants)
  • Golden Wonder or Rainbow Panchax
Would it be a "big no-no" to buy this pair and then add some of the above later on over the coming weeks?

Edit: Updated thoughts on stocking plan, plus I will be getting the Butterfly and Bush fishes on Tuesday, cannot wait! :D

Kribs can be very aggressive and territorial when they are breeding so its not the best idea to add more fish while they are breeding, but the other 23 in that tank can get just as colorful, my kribs were faded and ghostlike when i got them and now they are beautiful and breeding :D

Funny you should say that, a larger one of the group (male??) has coloured up over two days in a gorgeous electric blue, just like the namesake ram cichlids. I can forsee the LFS owner having a problem at this rate, as I reckon there are several pairs forming and the poor bachelor/ettes are getting less and less space in a ~40l tank :/

My male has short fins tho :p looks like a female xD
Any chance you could get some photos? or wont the lfs let you ?

I shall try and remember to take my Veho Muvi mini-camcorder with me to work tomorrow and then upload a clip...

Not so sure that a pair of Kribs is the way forward now, given my stocking plans and having run through them with my favourite LFS' manager:-

  • 1-3 African Butterfly Fish
  • 1-3 Golden Wonder or Rainbow Killifish
  • 6 Pearl Danios (already have)
  • 6 Humphead Glassfish
  • 2 Opsarius pulchellus (Pretty Hill Trout, Green-barred Danio, already have)
  • 5-8 "Orange-ringed Barb" (Puntius rhombellus, although pics look more like foeshi to me)
  • 4-6 Panda Garra
  • 1-3 Steatocranus (LFS have what we think may be a single Slender Lionhead tinanti, Worthing Maidenhead Aquatics show true Lionheads in stock through www.tropicalfishfinder.co.uk )
  • 1 African Bushfish
  • 1 or 2 African Filter Shrimp
Kribs could end up being a real bully problem for the Garra and Danios, plus there is a slight probable concentration of stock in the lower part of the tank already...

Fair enough m8 its always better to play safe :p
thought u might like to see my kribs?

What were the other fish in the background, Black Neons and a Harlequin Shark?

My favourite LFS has told me today about a shipment from the Congo river coming in, including the Krib relative, Pelviochromis nudiceps... Ever come across info on them ?
