My info on butterfly pl*cs. Same as tiger pl*c, L052, L168 also sometimes known as flounder pl*c. S. American grows up to 5" acid pH. Anna you may be thinking of the hillstream loach aka butterfly pl*c sold as algae eaters for coldwater tanks, grows up to 6" depending on species. I'm afraid common names are very confusing and what one lfs calls a fish may be totaly different to the next. If you can get a Latin name i.d. is no problem. Hope this helps slt. Mac.
you are so right about common names! They are so confusing.
The "butterfly" plecs I saw looked very like fat sting-rays and although they were about 4" long when I saw them, I was informed that they can grow to several feet long! So obviously they are not "hillstream loach" either, but something else entirely.
They were fresh water fish, suitable for out-door ponds and buyers were being discouraged from buying them for tanks (even large tanks). The one thing that my LFS drives me mad about is not using Latin names for things!
I'll see if I can identify my "butterfly plecs" for you, FYI.
thanks macquatic & alien anne,
there was no latin name on these fish only the common name,
but i shall go back to the shop and enquire further info on them,
also ask my local dealer if he can identify the fish, as he is very knowlegable
when i've found out i will let you no.
Gastromyzon Borneensis is a hillstream loach from S.E.Asia/Borneo. Grows to 10cm (4") and inhabits fast flowing streams, hence its compressed shape. Feeds on small invertebrates and algae from the bottom and can be kept in tropical temps. as long as it is not too warm. Mac.
I just found a pic of one of these critters and i must say they look cool! i shall be off to lfs to see if anyone has one....... not sure what kinda price i should be paying! I reckon one of you guys/gals could throw a price at me lol
